Woodsia obtusa
blunt-lobed cliff fern
We have a few favorite ferns and Woodsia obtusa is one. An easy to grow evergreen fern that produces new fronds throught the growing seasons which keeps this species looking fresh in a cultivated setting. Ferns in the “Woodsia” genus are generally found growing in part shade to shade locations on cliffs, they are known as “cliff ferns”, in fact. This shouldn’t keep you from planting some in your garden…I mean…if you don’t have a cliff… just look to place them in a rock garden or other similar setting.
Although blunt-lobed cliff fern is widespread in Massachusetts it is rare, threatened or endangered in other New England states.
