Tridens flavus
purpletop tridens
Tridens flavus puts on a modest display with light purple feathery clusters in late summer to early fall. Purpletop tridens thrives in dry, open areas with full sun, often found in disturbed soils or along roadsides. A bunchgrass that’s quite adaptable, performing well in loamy or sandy soils and tolerating periods of drought once established.
It offers seeds to a range of birds, including sparrows and finches, which forage on its seed heads during the fall months. Several species of grasshoppers and caterpillars, such as those of the common grass skipper (Oarisma garita), can be found feeding on the leaves, contributing to the ecosystem’s food web. In the winter, the plant’s dead stems offer shelter to insects and small critters, further extending its value.
Fun fact: Purpletop seeds are sometimes used to help establish grassland habitats in restoration projects due to their ability to establish quickly and tolerate a variety of conditions. It’s also known to be deer-resistant, which can be a blessing in areas with heavy browsing pressure.
