Sporobolus heterolepis
Northern dropseed is a handsome clump forming grass, easily grown in dry to medium soil in full to part sun. It has good drought tolerance once established...although it can be slow to establish.
This grass would fit well in a more traditional garden, replacing non-native ornamental grasses. The fine green leaves form arching foliage. Great fall color and unique looking when planted as a border, spaced 18" apart.
Northern dropseed is valuable ecologically; fall seeds provide nutritious food for seed-eating birds and lepidopteran caterpillars feed on the foliage.
Plants can be purchased in-person or online (with in-person pick-up).
