Solidago flexicaulis

Zig zag goldenrod

Zigzag goldenrod is a charming addition to any garden, with its striking blooms that resemble bursts of sunshine. This perennial typically blooms in late summer to early fall, offering tall, golden plumes. It thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, making it a perfect candidate for woodland gardens or shady corners. Contrary to the common misconception, goldenrods don’t cause allergies – it’s actually ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) that’s to blame for fall sniffles. Goldenrods are insect-pollinated, so they’re not the culprit when it comes to airborne pollen.

As a wildlife-friendly plant, zigzag goldenrod attracts an impressive variety of critters.  Butterflies, like the regal fritillary (Speyeria idalia), love to visit its blooms for nectar, while the Eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) flutters around the plant, contributing to pollination. It also provides a safe haven for birds and small mammals. During the colder months, songbirds like the American goldfinch nibble on its seeds, helping them through winter. So, by planting this golden beauty, you’re not only brightening your garden but also supporting your local wildlife.

Fun fact: This goldenrod species gets its “zigzag” name from the way its stems grow, curving back and forth in a way that seems almost artistic.
