Plant information
Golden Alexanders make a wonderful addition to any wildflower garden or naturalized area. Its attractive bright yellow flowers bloom from May-June and are an important nectar source for butterflies and short tongued insects. Other blooms for these insects are in short supply during these months.
Z. aurea is an easy, hardy plant and grows to about 2.5' tall with no notable problems or pests. It thrives in wet sites but is very tolerant of dry conditions as well. Ideally situate this plant in full to partial sun, although we can't stress how easy and adaptable this one is. Great for new gardeners! Britt has this in her yard in a shady spot under a Maple tree and it's doing beautifully.
Zizia aurea is the host plant for the Black Swallowtail caterpillar. Host plants are essential for survival of these species. So plant some golden Alexanders and enjoy the butterflies that come to visit!
