Plant information
New York ironweed comes by its name honestly, between the tough-as-nails plant characteristics and the rust colored seeds and rusty color of the fading blooms. While this plant is very tolerant of different soils, it prefers the rich soils of woodland gardens, with plenty of decaying leaf litter.
Slightly reminiscent of Joe-Pye weed, this tall perennial stands 4-6 feet off the ground and bears flat-topped clusters of deep lavender flower heads. Use this plant in the back of garden beds for the perfect backdrop.
New York Ironweed has moderate drought resistance and can tolerate clay soils. Along with being attractive to pollinators, this plant is also juglone tolerant (black walnut trees), so it can be planted in areas where that is a concern.
