Scrophularia marilandica
Late figwort
Figworts don't have the showiest of flowers but they supply an incredible amount of nectar. Scrophularia species are highly recommended by the Xerces Society. They have: "special value to native bees: recognized by pollination ecologists as attracting a large numbers of native bees." Also a favorite of ruby-throated hummingbirds! Read more from Xerces Society here.
Blooming from late summer to early fall and reaching heights of 5-7 feet, late figwort prefers average to dry soil. They will generally do well with any sun exposure from full sun to full shade.
Not only does the nectar attract a variety of pollinators, but it also the host plant for the caterpillars of many Checkerspot butterflies!
