Pycnanthemum incanum

Hoary mountain mint

Pycnanthemum incanum is a rugged and aromatic perennial native to eastern North America. This plant thrives in dry, well-drained soils, often found in fields, prairies, and open woodlands. It prefers full sun, which helps it produce its striking, silvery-gray foliage and small clusters of white to pale purple flowers. While it’s adaptable to a variety of soil types, it does best in slightly acidic to neutral conditions, where it can grow from 2 to 4 feet tall, forming dense clumps. Once established, hoary mountain mint is relatively low-maintenance, tolerating drought once it's settled in, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalizing landscapes.

This fragrant mint is a powerhouse when it comes to supporting local wildlife. Pollinators, in particular, are drawn to its bountiful flowers, making it an excellent nectar source for a variety of insects. Bees, such as the common eastern bumblebee (Bombus impatiens), are frequent visitors, helping to pollinate the plant. Butterflies like the eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) also benefit from the abundant nectar, as do moths, including the Virginia ctenucha (Ctenucha virginica), which is known for its striking blue-black coloration. Additionally, the plant’s dense foliage provides shelter and protection for small mammals and insects, creating a little wildlife oasis in any garden.
