Penstemon pallidus
pale beardtongue
Penstemon pallidus is a charming perennial native to the northeastern United States. This plant, often found in dry, rocky soils, thrives in full sun, basking in the warmth of its environment. It typically grows in well-drained, sandy, or gravelly soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping or rocky garden beds. Its tall, upright habit features clusters of tubular, pale lavender-pink flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer. The plant reaches a height of about 12 inches, and its narrow, lance-shaped leaves offer a textured backdrop to the delicate blooms.
Pale penstemon is not only a striking addition to a garden but also provides important ecological benefits. The tubular flowers attract pollinators like hummingbirds and various species of native bees, such as the Eastern bumblebee (Bombus impatiens). Butterflies, like the Eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus), are also drawn to the nectar, making it a vital source of food for these creatures. Additionally, its seeds provide a valuable food source for birds, particularly sparrows, during the fall and winter months.
