Liatris novae angliae (New England blazing star)

Liatris novae angliae

New England blazing star

The ONLY Liatris native to New England! Aptly named, New England blazing star. There are a lot of dramatic Liatris species but we at Blue Stem are quite partial to Liatris novae angliae. The pink flowers boldly displayed on tall stalks look a bit like pom poms, fireworks, or blazing stars, as it were.

Dramatic, highly beneficial, and grows in tough conditions. Preferring full sun in dry low-nutrient sandy conditions. This perennial will grow well in average soil conditions as well but is more particular about needing full sun.

A deer resistant perennial that mixes well with species that also prefer sunny, nutrient poor soils like Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), Pennsylvania Sedge (Carex pensylvanica), and Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa). Note that New England Blazing star is sensitive to competition so weed other problematic species as needed.

Liatris tend to be sensitive to being moved especially when young. So plant where you would like it to live.
