Iris prismatica

Slender blue iris

Iris prismatica is a charming little plant that thrives in moist, boggy conditions. This perennial iris, native to North America, typically grows about 12 to 18 inches tall and prefers to settle in rich, well-draining soil that’s consistently moist, particularly in areas like wetlands or along streams. While it enjoys full sun, it can tolerate partial shade, though it tends to bloom more prolifically when basking in sunlight. It’s an excellent choice for rain gardens or those tricky spots with seasonal flooding, as long as the soil retains moisture. Its striking blue-purple flowers, which bloom in late spring to early summer, create a beautiful contrast against its slender, grass-like leaves.

Beyond its beauty, Iris prismatica is a real gem for local wildlife. Its flowers attract pollinators like bees which are drawn to its nectar-rich blooms. The dense foliage provides a perfect refuge for ground-dwelling insects which feed on the plant. Moreover, the iris is a favorite of the northern waterthrush, a migratory bird that uses wetlands as stopover points, seeking shelter and food from the moist environment. By incorporating Iris prismatica into your garden, you’re not only brightening up the landscape but also supporting vital local ecosystems.
