Hylodesmum glutinosum (formerly Desmodium glutinosum)

Pointed-leaved Tick Trefoil

Pointed-leaved Tick Trefoil (Hylodesmum glutinosum) is a charming perennial that thrives in partial shade. Plant it where it can spread out, because it has a nice, gentle sprawling habit that makes it great for filling in gaps or creating a soft, natural ground cover. From mid to late summer, it sends up clusters of lovely, pea-like pinky-purple flowers that add a pop of color. These blooms also have a light, pleasant fragrance that’s not overpowering, but definitely delightful when you're up close.

This plant is an absolute gem for wildlife, especially if you're looking to attract pollinators. Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), for instance, will happily stop by for a snack of nectar. The plant also supports a variety of native bees, including the Common Green Metallic Bee (Agapostemon virescens), which loves to forage on its blooms. Plus, birds like the Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) may use the dense foliage for nesting or shelter. And if you're a fan of seeing caterpillars around, you're in luck—this plant is a favorite of various butterfly larvae, including those of the Long-tailed Skipper (Urbanus proteus), which can sometimes be spotted in the wild.

Note: The seed pods have little hooks that can cling to fur or clothes, it's nature’s own way of helping the plant spread far and wide.
