Heuchera americana
American alum root
Heuchera americana is a hardy perennial that thrives in shady to partially shaded environments. This plant forms a dense rosette of lobed, evergreen leaves that can range in color from deep green to purple or red, depending on the cultivar. Preferring well-drained, humus-rich soils, Heuchera americana is perfect for woodland gardens or as an understory plant in more formal landscapes. Its relatively low-growing habit, usually about 12-24" inches tall, makes it an excellent choice for groundcover or container gardening. While it can tolerate a bit of direct sunlight, especially in cooler climates, too much sun can scorch the leaves, so it's best to plant it where it gets some afternoon shade.
In addition to its beauty, Heuchera americana is a valuable addition to any garden looking to attract wildlife. The tiny, bell-shaped flowers that bloom in late spring or early summer provide a nectar source for pollinators like the Ruby-throated Hummingbird and various species of bees. Its foliage also offers shelter for critters like the Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) and beneficial insects, which can find refuge in the dense leaves.
