Echinacea pallida
pale purple coneflower
Echinacea pallida, or pale purple coneflower, is a resilient, native prairie/meadow perennial that boasts long, slender petals in soft shades of pink to lavender, and a prominent, spiky central cone. It thrives in well-drained, slightly sandy to loamy soils and prefers full sun exposure, making it a perfect choice for gardens with a bit of a wild streak.
These coneflowers are tough cookies, able to tolerate drought once established, and their deep taproot helps them resist the elements. They don’t ask for much in terms of maintenance, but a spot where they can stretch out and bask in the sunlight is key to their success.
Wildlife loves Echinacea pallida as much as we do, especially when it comes to pollination. Bees are drawn to the vibrant flowers. These plants also serve as a valuable food source for birds. In the fall, finches like the American goldfinch eagerly feast on the seeds, while a variety of butterflies, such as the regal monarch (Danaus plexippus), rely on the plant for both nectar and as a habitat for their larvae. With its combination of beauty, ease of care, and wildlife benefits, the pale purple coneflower is truly a gift for both gardeners and the creatures they share their space with.
