Sericocarpus asteroides

toothed white-top-aster

Toothed white-top-aster blooms in late summer to fall, showing off small white to pink flowers that resemble daisies. These blooms appear in clusters at the tips of the plant's slender stems, creating a nice burst of color when most other plants are winding down. Sericocarpus asteroides grows in clumps, reaching up to 2" feet tall, great for filling in those gaps in your garden. It prefers part sun and average to dry soils but is tolerant of other conditions.

This aster is a hit with wildlife, particularly with birds and insects. Its flowers attract butterflies like the pearl crescent (Phyciodes tharos) and the red admiral (Vanessa atalanta), who flock to it for nectar as they migrate south. The seeds are a favorite for birds, especially sparrows, who will come around in fall when food sources are getting scarce.

Frost aster is adaptable to various conditions and will handle salt exposure, which is perfect for coastal or urban areas. It’s a good way to add some late-season color and help out the local wildlife at the same time.
