Blephilia hirsuta

Hairy wood-mint

Blephilia hirsuta resembles it’s cousin B. ciliata with its flower formation however it is easily distinguished primarily due to the fine, short hairs which cover the stems and underside of the leaves.

Hairy wood-mint has the same minty aroma which tends to deter deer and rabbits, making it an ideal choice to place around other garden plants for some protection.

The long bloom time serves to support our native bees and is also a desirable nectar source for butterflies, bee-flies, and syrphids. New England is at the top of the native range of Blephilia hirsuta, and as such, it is considered a species of concern in Conneticut and extremely rare and endangered in Massachusetts. Care must be taken when observing in wild spaces to not disturb the site.

Plants can be purchased in-person or online (with in-person pick-up).
