Antennaria parlinii
Parlin's Pussytoes
A charming perennial, Antennaia parlinii thrives in well-drained soils, typically preferring drier conditions. It is naturally found in a variety of habitats including open woodlands, meadows, and grasslands, where it can receive ample sunlight. This plant favors full sun but can tolerate partial shade, though it may not flower as vigorously in the latter. It is quite adaptable to poor soil conditions, often growing in sandy, rocky, or nutrient-poor ground, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping or areas with less-than-ideal soil quality.
Parlin's Pussytoes plays a notable role in supporting local wildlife in New England. Its late-summer flowers, which are a soft pinkish-white, attract a host of pollinators. A favorite of many butterfly species, including Pyrgus communis (Common Checkered Skipper) and Colias philodice (Clouded Sulphur), its blooms provide an essential nectar source during the late summer and early fall. The plant’s low, dense growth also offers ground cover for various insects and small critters seeking shelter from predators.
